24 Hour Customer Service: Answering Service vs AI (2026)
A small team has four realistic ways to get 24 hour customer service:
- Staff shifts. You hire people, in-house or offshore, to work nights and weekends.
- An answering service or after-hours call center. Live receptionists answer your calls (and sometimes your website chat) when you are closed.
- An AI agent on chat channels. It answers routine questions at any hour and leaves the rest for your team in the morning.
- A mix. An AI agent takes chat, and an answering service takes calls.
The right choice depends on one question: do your after-hours customers call, or do they type? This post gives current prices from four answering services, costs each option for one example team, and shows how the morning handoff works.
All vendor prices below come from each vendor’s own pricing page, checked on October 28, 2026. Prices change, so confirm them before you budget. Where a vendor does not publish a price, this post says “not published”.
How much does 24 hour customer service cost?
Answering services price in three ways: per minute of receptionist time, per call, or per chat. Each one also bills in monthly bundles.
| Vendor | Plan | Monthly price | Included | Over the plan | Price per included unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PATLive | 200 minutes | $349 | 200 minutes | $1.99 per minute | $1.75 per minute |
| PATLive | 500 minutes | $759 | 500 minutes | $1.79 per minute | $1.52 per minute |
| AnswerConnect | Growth | $395 | 300 minutes | $1.85 per minute | $1.32 per minute |
| AnswerConnect | 550 minutes | $795 | 550 minutes | $1.85 per minute | $1.45 per minute |
| Ruby | 200 minutes | $720 | 200 minutes | Not published | $3.60 per minute |
| Ruby | 500 minutes | $1,725 | 500 minutes | Not published | $3.45 per minute |
| Smith.ai | Basic | $810 | 90 calls | $10.50 per call | $9.00 per call |
| Smith.ai | Pro | $2,100 | 300 calls | $8.50 per call | $7.00 per call |
All four vendors say they answer calls 24/7. PATLive and Ruby also name weekends and holidays. The fine print differs:
- PATLive bills only the time a receptionist is live on your call. It does not charge for after-call notes or wrap-up. Plans have no contracts. A pay-as-you-go plan costs $49 a month plus $2.99 per minute.
- AnswerConnect rounds every interaction up to the nearest minute. The first 30 interactions under 30 seconds in each billing cycle are free. The Entry plan (200 minutes, $350) adds a $49.99 setup fee and charges $2.50 per extra minute. Growth has no setup fee.
- Ruby sells 50, 100, 200, and 500 minute plans. It does not publish how it counts minutes or what an extra minute costs. For more volume, it asks you to talk to sales.
- Smith.ai bills per call. It says it does not charge for spam or unsolicited sales calls if your forwarded lines pass caller ID.
Live chat coverage costs more per conversation. PATLive live chat is $499 a month for 100 chats and $1,999 for 400 chats, with 24/7 coverage. Ruby chat is $520 a month for 50 chats on its own, or $416 as an add-on to a receptionist plan. AnswerConnect lists Live Chat as a feature on its Growth and Standard plans. It does not say how it bills chats, so ask how it counts chat time before you compare.
AI voice receptionists are a newer option for calls. Smith.ai’s AI receptionist has a free plan with 25 calls a month and $3.00 per call after that. Its Pro plan is $150 a month for 75 calls ($2.00 per call).
Staff shifts are the most expensive option. A week has 168 hours. If you work 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, 128 of them are after hours. That is 128 × 52 ÷ 12 = about 555 hours a month. At 160 hours per full-time person, you need about 3.5 people for one person on duty every night and weekend. The US median wage for customer service representatives is $21.53 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics), checked October 28, 2026. Add 25 percent for taxes and benefits (our assumption) and you get about $27 an hour. 555 hours × $27 = about $14,985 a month, before night premiums and sick cover. Offshore hires lower the hourly rate. You still fill 555 hours. Our outsourcing cost comparison prices dedicated offshore agents.
Worked example: 600 after-hours contacts a month
These numbers are assumptions. Replace them with your own.
- Team: 3 people. They work 9 to 5, Monday to Friday.
- After-hours volume: 600 contacts a month. 420 are website chats (70 percent). 180 are phone calls (30 percent).
- Call length: 3 billable minutes per call, after rounding. 180 calls × 3 = 540 minutes.
- Daytime chat: 800 more chats a month during business hours.
- AI resolution: an AI agent resolves 60 percent of after-hours chats (252) and escalates 168 to the team.
Option 1: staff shifts
- 555 hours × $27 = $14,985 a month.
Option 2: answering service for calls and chat (PATLive)
- Calls: the 500-minute plan is $759. 40 extra minutes × $1.79 = $71.60. Total: $830.60.
- Chats: the 400-chat plan is $1,999. 20 extra chats × $6.99 = $139.80. Total: $2,138.80.
- Total: $2,969.40 a month.
The next smaller plans cost more: 300 minutes plus overage is $932.60, and 300 chats plus overage is $2,373.80.
Option 3: AI agent on chat, answering service for calls
- Chats: an AI agent with a flat plan. SupportHQ Starter is $29 a month for 2,000 conversations. SupportHQ counts every conversation, day and night. 800 daytime + 420 after-hours = 1,220, so Starter covers it.
- Calls with AnswerConnect: 540 minutes fits the 550-minute plan. Total: $795.
- Total: $824 a month.
With PATLive for calls instead, the total is $29 + $830.60 = $859.60. With Smith.ai, 180 calls on the Basic plan cost $810 + (90 × $10.50) = $1,755, so the total is $1,784.
We leave Ruby out of the math. Its largest published plan is 500 minutes, and it does not publish an overage rate.
Option 4: AI agent on chat only
- Total: $29 a month. The 180 calls go to voicemail. Do not pick this option if callers expect a person.
The comparison
| Calls (180) | Chats (420) | Monthly total | Who answers at 3 a.m. | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Staff shifts | In-house | In-house | about $14,985 | Your staff |
| 2. PATLive for both | $830.60 | $2,138.80 | $2,969.40 | Receptionists |
| 3. AI on chat + AnswerConnect | $795 | $29 | $824 | Receptionists on calls, AI on chat |
| 4. AI on chat only | Voicemail | $29 | $29 | AI on chat, nobody on calls |
Chat is the expensive part of PATLive’s bill. In option 2, chat is $2,138.80 of the $2,969.40 bill. A human chat agent costs about $5 per chat on PATLive’s 400-chat plan. An AI agent on a flat plan does not charge per chat.
Options 2 to 4 all leave work for the morning. Receptionists take messages, and the AI agent escalates 168 chats. Somebody on your team still handles those. Staff shifts are the only option where a person you trained answers at night.
If most of your calls are phone calls
Change one assumption: 480 calls and 120 chats. At 3 minutes per call, that is 1,440 minutes.
| Calls with | Calls | Chats with PATLive | Chats with an AI agent |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnswerConnect, 1,500-minute plan | $2,025 | $658 | $29 |
| PATLive, 1,000-minute plan + 440 × $1.69 | $2,242.60 | $658 | $29 |
| Smith.ai Pro, 300 calls + 180 × $8.50 | $3,630 | $658 | $29 |
The chat line is PATLive’s 100-chat plan ($499) plus 20 × $7.95 = $658.
Here the answering service is almost the whole bill. AnswerConnect plus an AI agent costs $2,054. The AI agent saves $629 a month on chat, but it does nothing for the 480 calls. If your after-hours volume is mostly phone calls, start with an answering service. If you get chats too, an AI agent covers them for less than a chat service.
When an answering service is the better choice
Be honest about channel fit before you compare prices.
- Your customers call. SupportHQ has no phone or voice channel. Count last month’s after-hours calls and chats. If calls are the larger share, an answering service is the right tool.
- Your customers email. SupportHQ has no email inbox. If email is your main after-hours channel, use a help desk with email ticketing.
- A person must speak at night. An emergency repair line or an urgent medical call needs a human voice.
- Your docs are thin. An AI agent answers from the content you give it. If your answers live only in your head, a receptionist with a script is easier to start. Write the docs anyway, because both options work better with them.
An AI agent is the better choice when most after-hours contact is typed: website chat, Telegram, or Discord. It also fits when the same questions repeat (hours, prices, shipping, setup steps). Our guide to what to automate first shows how to sort your questions.
How to offer 24 hour customer service without night staff
Decide this before you turn anything on. Each case below needs a person, whatever answers first:
- Refunds, billing exceptions, and account changes. The AI agent or the receptionist can explain the policy. Only your team can act on it.
- Quotes and appointments. Collect the job details, the preferred times, and a phone number. Then hand off.
- Complaints and angry customers. A person replies, with the full thread in front of them.
- Outages, security issues, and data loss. These can justify a night alert. Agree in advance who gets woken up.
- Anything your docs do not cover. A handoff is better than a guess.
Our human handoff workflows guide covers escalation triggers in detail.
How the morning handoff works
The night shift matters less than the morning queue. If the queue is a pile of “please call me back” messages, your team loses the first hour of the day.
With an answering service, you get a message for each call that needs you. Ask each vendor how it delivers messages and what details it captures.
With SupportHQ, each escalation reaches the unified inbox with three things the agent writes itself:
- A reason for the escalation, such as “Customer wants a refund for a duplicate charge.”
- An urgency level.
- A summary of the conversation so far.
The full thread sits under the summary. Your team gets alerts by email, Telegram, or SMS, set per project. SMS is for alerts to your team only. Customers do not chat with the agent by text message. Any teammate can join any conversation. The urgency level helps the person on call decide what waits until 9 a.m. See how handoff works for an example thread.
The agent also replies in the customer’s language. That helps if your night traffic comes from other time zones.
Two habits make the morning faster:
- Put your hours in the knowledge base. Then the agent can tell a customer when a person will reply.
- Work the queue by urgency. Answer high-urgency threads first, then the rest in order. Our response time benchmarks help you set a target for first reply.
How much does 24/7 chat support cost?
SupportHQ has no per-seat fees and no per-resolution fees. You can add your whole team to the inbox at no extra cost.
| After-hours chat coverage | Monthly price | Chats included | Answers phone calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby chat, standalone | $520 | 50 | Separate plan |
| PATLive live chat | $1,999 | 400 | Separate plan |
| SupportHQ Starter | $29 | 2,000 conversations, day and night | No |
| SupportHQ Growth | $49 | 3,000 conversations, day and night | No |
The products are not the same. Ruby and PATLive put a person on each chat. SupportHQ puts an AI agent on each chat and sends what needs a person to your team. For calls, keep an answering service.
To test the chat side, run the agent on your website for one week and count what it resolves overnight. That number tells you whether chat needs a human service at all. See SupportHQ pricing and the page for small businesses, or start a 7-day trial. A card is required to start the trial.
