7 Zendesk Alternatives for Small Teams (2026)
Zendesk is a strong help desk for support organizations with process: tickets, routing, SLAs, and phone. Small teams start to look at Zendesk alternatives when the bill and the setup grow faster than the team.
Each entry names the Zendesk problem it leaves unsolved. Every price comes from the vendor’s own pricing page, checked on October 1, 2026, in USD. Prices change, so confirm before you sign.
Why small teams look for Zendesk alternatives
Per-agent pricing. Suite Team is $55 per agent per month paid yearly ($69 monthly), and Suite Professional is $115 ($149). Every person who replies to customers needs an agent license.
AI resolution fees. AI agents are in every plan, but Zendesk bills them per automated resolution: a request the AI agent resolves with no escalation to a person. Team plans include 5 per agent per month, and Suite Professional includes 10. Above that, each resolution costs $1.50 on a committed volume or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Those are the rates on the pricing page. Zendesk’s help center says new accounts now get resolution tiers with prices set by sales, so treat them as a reference, not a quote.
Setup weight. A Suite plan asks you to run ticketing, triggers, omnichannel routing, a knowledge base, messaging, and telephony. The AI agent answers mainly from your Zendesk help center content, so a team without a help center builds one first. Our Zendesk pricing breakdown lists the paid add-ons.
Check two Zendesk options before you leave. Support Team is $19 per agent per month paid yearly ($25 monthly). It covers email ticketing, routing, and automations, but not messaging or live chat. Early-stage startups can apply to Zendesk for Startups: a 6-month Suite trial for up to 50 agents. Our Zendesk alternative page has the full side-by-side with SupportHQ.
The pricing model matters more than the entry price. Our guide to how much AI customer support costs explains why.
The 7 Zendesk alternatives
1. Freshdesk: for email-first teams that want a cheaper help desk
Freshdesk is the closest like-for-like replacement: email ticketing with SLA policies and a customer portal.
- Strengths: Growth is $19 per agent per month, billed annually, about a third of the Suite Team seat price. Pro is $55. The Freddy AI Agent replies to support emails. 14-day trial with Enterprise features.
- Does not solve: Per-agent pricing stays. AI is still metered: 500 sessions are included once per account, not per month, then sessions cost $49 per 100. Packs expire with your payment cycle, so on annual billing you buy a year of packs up front. A session is any interaction between a customer and the AI agent, so you pay for attempts, not only resolutions. Live chat is not on the Freshdesk pricing page; Freshworks sells it as Freshchat or Freshdesk Omni. No free plan.
- Best for: Teams whose volume is mostly email. See our Freshdesk comparison.
2. Zoho Desk: for the lowest per-agent price
Zoho Desk is a full help desk with the lowest seat prices here. Prices are from its USD price list.
- Strengths: Express is $7 per agent per month billed yearly ($9 monthly). Standard is $14 ($20) and Professional $23 ($35). A free edition covers email ticketing for 3 users. AI agents are on every paid plan, with up to 30M free tokens a month or your own model key. Standard adds an answer bot that replies from your knowledge base, plus WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Telegram. 15-day trial, no card.
- Does not solve: Setup weight. It is a full help desk too. Per-agent pricing stays, only cheaper. The page does not say how many conversations 30M tokens cover. Full website live chat (Zoho SalesIQ) is on Enterprise; Standard’s chat widget is for logged-in customers.
- Best for: Budget-conscious teams that want ticketing and will configure it.
3. Help Scout: for small teams that want a calm shared inbox
Help Scout is an email-first shared inbox with a knowledge base.
- Strengths: Free for up to 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site, and 100 contacts a month. Standard is $25 per user per month billed annually and adds live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. 15-day trial, no card.
- Does not solve: Per-user pricing above the free plan. AI Answers is still billed per resolution, at $0.75 instead of Zendesk’s $1.50 to $2.00. New accounts get 3 months of free, unlimited resolutions, and you can set a monthly cap. AI Answers is not on the free plan.
- Best for: Teams of 5 or fewer on email with modest AI volume. See our Help Scout comparison.
4. Front: for teams that work email together
Front is a shared inbox for teams that answer customers from email together.
- Strengths: Starter is $25 per seat per month billed annually, for up to 10 seats, with ticketing, a basic knowledge base, and up to 10 automation rules. Professional ($65, up to 50 seats) adds omnichannel, macros, and SSO. 14-day trial with Professional features, no card.
- Does not solve: Per-seat pricing stays. Starter supports one channel type: email, Front Chat, or SMS. Email plus chat means Professional at $65 per seat. The Autopilot AI agent is an add-on “starting at $0.05 per conversation” through sales. No free plan.
- Best for: Email-heavy teams of up to 10 where several people work the same threads.
5. Crisp: for teams with too many chat channels
Crisp is a multichannel inbox priced per workspace, not per agent.
- Strengths: Free for 2 seats. Mini is $45 a month per workspace with 4 seats, a shared email inbox, and $5 of AI credits (about 90 automated conversations). Essentials is $95 with 10 seats, $25 of credits (about 450 conversations), and WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, and more. Telegram is also a listed channel. Extra seats are $10 a month. 14-day trial, no card.
- Does not solve: AI is credit-metered, so more AI volume means a bigger plan or more credits.
- Best for: Teams that answer customers in several messaging apps and want one inbox before they add AI. It is not a ticketing replacement. See our Crisp comparison.
6. Intercom: for funded teams that want a full platform
Intercom is the most complete product here, with ticketing, support email, live chat, in-app messages, and the Fin AI agent.
- Strengths: Essential is $29 per seat per month billed annually, about half the Suite Team seat price. Fin costs from $0.99 per outcome. 14-day trial, no card, with Fin included.
- Does not solve: Neither bill goes away. Intercom has the same two-meter shape as Zendesk, at lower rates. An outcome counts when a customer confirms resolution, does not ask for more help, or Fin completes a workflow, including a handoff. No free plan.
- Best for: Teams that want Zendesk-level breadth with cheaper seats. See our Intercom comparison.
7. SupportHQ: for chat-first teams that do not need ticketing
SupportHQ is our product, so weigh this entry with that in mind. It is not a ticketing system and has no email inbox. If most of your Zendesk volume is email, it does not replace Zendesk.
- Strengths: An AI agent trained on your docs, website, and past conversations. It answers only from approved content on a website chat widget, Telegram, and Discord, all in one inbox. It escalates on its own with a reason, urgency, and summary. Starter is $29 a month for 2,000 conversations and 5 projects; Growth is $49 for 3,000 and unlimited projects. Unlimited team members, no per-resolution fees.
- Does not solve: Email. No SLA engine, no phone, no SMS to customers. WhatsApp is coming soon, not live. No free plan: the trial is 7 days and needs a card.
- Best for: Teams whose customers ask on the website, in Telegram, or in Discord.

Per-agent, per-user, and per-seat prices are annual-billing rates. SupportHQ’s $29 is the monthly rate.
Worked example: what a 4-person team pays
This is an example, not a benchmark. Assumptions: 4 people answer 500 conversations a month. The AI agent replies first in every one and fully resolves 200 (40%). The other 300 go to a person. Annual billing where published. No tax, phone, or optional add-ons.
- Zendesk Suite Team. Seats 4 × $55 = $220. Billable resolutions 200 − 20 included = 180. At the pricing-page reference rate, committed: 180 × $1.50 = $270, total $490. Pay-as-you-go: 180 × $2.00 = $360, total $580.
- Freshdesk Growth. Seats 4 × $19 = $76. All 500 AI conversations are sessions. Month one uses the one-time 500. From month two: 5 × $49 = $245, total $321. Email only.
- Intercom Essential. Seats 4 × $29 = $116. Fin 200 × $0.99 = $198, total from $314. Completed handoff workflows can also count as outcomes.
- Help Scout Standard. Seats 4 × $25 = $100. AI 200 × $0.75 = $150, total $250 ($100 for the first 3 months).
- Front Starter. Seats 4 × $25 = $100. Autopilot at its starting rate: 500 × $0.05 = $25, total from $125, one channel type. Email plus chat on Professional: 4 × $65 + $25 = from $285.
- Crisp Essentials. Mini’s 90 AI conversations are too few. Essentials at $95 covers about 450. The page lists no top-up price. At the Essentials bundle rate ($25 for 450, about $0.06 each), 50 more cost about $3, for a total of about $98. If Crisp does not sell extra credits, the next plan is Plus at $295.
- Zoho Desk Standard. Seats 4 × $14 = $56. No per-resolution fee on the pricing page. Total $56, if the token allowance covers your volume.
- SupportHQ Starter. $29 for 500 of 2,000 included conversations and 4 people. No email channel.
| Tool and plan | Seats | AI | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Suite Team (reference rate) | $220 | $270 to $360 | $490 to $580 |
| Freshdesk Growth (email only) | $76 | $245 from month two | $321 |
| Intercom Essential | $116 | from $198 | from $314 |
| Help Scout Standard | $100 | $150 | $250 |
| Front Starter (one channel type) | $100 | from $25 | from $125 |
| Crisp Essentials | included | about $3 extra | about $98 |
| Zoho Desk Standard (chat for logged-in users only) | $56 | no listed fee | $56 |
| SupportHQ Starter (no email) | included | included | $29 |
What the table hides. Let the AI improve to 300 resolutions. Zendesk pay-as-you-go rises by 100 × $2.00 = $200 at the reference rate. Intercom rises by $99, Help Scout by $75. Freshdesk stays flat, because it already charged for every session, resolved or not. Front’s Autopilot bills per conversation, so it also stays flat and also charges for misses. Crisp, Zoho Desk, and SupportHQ stay flat. Per-resolution meters charge more as the AI improves.
A fifth hire adds $55 on Zendesk, $29 on Intercom, $25 on Help Scout or Front, $19 on Freshdesk, $14 on Zoho Desk, and nothing on Crisp Essentials or SupportHQ.
Which Zendesk alternative to pick
- Stay on Zendesk Support Team if you only need email ticketing. At $19 per agent, the seat problem is smaller than the Suite price suggests.
- Pick Freshdesk if email is most of your volume and you want SLAs.
- Pick Zoho Desk if seat price is the main problem and you can configure a help desk.
- Pick Help Scout if you are 5 people or fewer and email-first. Under 100 contacts a month with no AI, the free plan may be enough.
- Pick Front if your team works one channel, usually email, together.
- Pick Crisp if customers are spread across many chat apps and AI volume is under about 450 conversations a month.
- Pick Intercom if you want the full platform, have budget, and accept two meters.
- Pick SupportHQ if customers reach you by website chat, Telegram, or Discord rather than email, and you want the AI bill fixed.
A split setup also works: keep email on Zendesk Support Team or Freshdesk, and put an AI agent on chat.
Run the example with your own numbers
Pull three numbers from last month in Zendesk: the people who replied to customers, the conversations by channel, and how many the AI agent fully resolved. Multiply each vendor’s seat price by the first. Apply its AI meter to the second and third. Then check the email column.
If chat, Telegram, or Discord carries most of your volume, test SupportHQ on your real questions for 7 days. Set escalation rules first with our human handoff guide, check pricing, or start the trial. If email carries most of it, start with Freshdesk, Help Scout, or Zoho Desk.
